Grovesnor Makes It Timeless - danosaur
The much celebrated former Hot Chip member turned solo-artist, Grovesnor, put out a new music video this week. It’s a gem that tells a really great (read: creepy) story for the hit song, “Dan”. “Dan” is one of my favorite tracks off Soft Return, and not just because it’s also my name. The song as a whole is really timeless in a way, both in lyrical content as well as musical styling. It just has this unshakeable old-school appeal.
That same approach was carried through from the music into the video. No cellphones, no fancy gadgets, no modern day signifiers to speak of. The video works hard at making you feel like this could be any time in the last 30-40(ish) years. The storyline tells of the conflict between Dan, the bassist, and Rob, (aka Mr. Grovesnor). Grovesnor is in love with Dan’s woman, and this conflict is weighing heavy on him as their wedding day approaches. Oh and did I mention Grovesnor is the best man? The final reveal brings everything full circle, unveiling that the previously fictious “Dan”, is in fact the bassist Dan. It definitely made me laugh out loud a few times.
Finally, a video that speaks to the music it’s accompanying. The director does a superb job of sticking to the music, while creating something new to enjoy and soak in. Grab “Dan” off our Stuck On Repeat #002 and enjoy another Soft Return favorite below.
