Scene But Not Herd - V
Chicago is a city that boasts a bevy of competing and complementary music scenes. In the past couple years a fresh, new generation has taken hold of Chicago’s rich hip-hop history and put their own spin on it, forging a scene that long ago bypassed the city’s limits and got a nation to take note.
Welcome to HIP-hop.
The wild success of musicians like The Cool Kids and Kid Sister have resurged the publics’ interest in Chicago as a musical tastemaking hotbed and breathed life into a scene that was growing stagnant and needed a new perspective. But unfortunately, there can be too much of a good thing. With success comes imitation and you don’t have to travel far on our city’s streets to find that they are paved with streetwear and party rhymes. Once upon a time we danced with Flosstradamus, Kid Sis and The Cool Kids in a sweaty dive bar nestled between a row of gay clubs. Now we reminisce on the simpler times while mass deleting facebook event invites.
A city of voices all fighting to be the next big thing inevitably results in a struggle to keep your sound unique. Flosstradamus cohort and longtime scene fixture Vyle has found a niche with his electro-influenced, spaced-out hip-hop. When so many other Chicago rappers took influence from one another, creating a sea of too-similar sounds, Vyle stayed true to his Chicago roots, collaborating with Flosstradamus and Million$Mano while also looking past the local and infusing his rhymes with electro stylings from abroad.
Vyle recently unleashed his new mixtape, Oh I Think Dey Like Hoodtronics Vol. 2, which features an all-star production roster including Shazam, Busy P, Chuck Inglish, Daedalus, DANGER and Bobmo. I admit that Vyle’s rhymes can be hit or miss for me, often veering off in a direction too esoteric for my taste. However, when Vyle finds the right collaborators, as he does several times on Hoodtronics Vol. 2, the results are an impressive mix of smart rhymes and hard-hitting beats.
Today our friends the Boy Kings premiered the first episode of their new Wayne’s World-inspired web series BK.TV which takes viewers into their home for a chat and performance with local musicians. Vyle is their first guest of honor so check out his rhymes kitchen sinkside above and my two favorite tracks off his new mixtape as well as the full download link below.
