Dudes like Bird Peterson and Krames have been killing the club genre for sometime, combining glitchy, bmore-esque beats, booty bass and screwed vocals for an aural onslaught best enjoyed on a dancefloor, drink in hand. Both Bird and Krames call Philly-based label Flamin’ Hotz their home and the newest addition to the label’s roster, Proper Villains is set to blow up in a big way.
Proper Villains is NYC-based DJ Jon S, and while he’s had several notable remixes and mixtapes floating around the web for some time, it’s his new EP, Big Apple Bounce, that has caught my ears. Big Apple Bounce sweeps through eight tracks of heavy bass, bmore and fidget house influences, but don’t let those terms turn you off. Proper Villains utilizes all the tricks of the trade to create a sound that will hold up against the big players of the club genre, but delivered with an undercurrent of sophistication that very few of his contemporaries can compete with. Proper Villains success comes from his skill at layering just the right mix of elements. Ready or Not is a particularly good example, sampling and twisting the Delfonics’ original 1969 version of Ready Or Not into a unique club track that, despite its funky minimalism, still holds up amongst the harder material on the EP.
There are plenty more, less overt samples to be discovered on Big Apple Bounce and that is the brilliance of this release. Proper Villains takes your favorite jukebox that doesn’t really exist and turns it upside down to create one of the most unexpected and refreshing dancefloor releases of the year.

Hmm…. Paul Johnson’s "Get down" is on "Big Apple bounce".
Maybe call it "Chi-town bounce?" cause that might be more appropriate.
And the original is better.

Also I remember thinking it would be cool if someone made a song called "get up" and it would go…"get up, up up up up!" and then, like, you could have a get up, get down mix…all at the same time.
