What Does Summer Mean To You? - V

Lately, I’ve spent some time reflecting upon my musical taste in 2009. In the past few years, music (particularly the electronic) has trended towards bigger, louder and harder. Production values are at an all-time high and the internet and blogs make it easy for artists to quickly rise from unknown to star status. As I ponder the first half of the year, I realize I’ve found myself tuning out much of this in favor of the introspective intimacy of lo-fi material.

Beach Fossils are exemplary in defining the merits of lo-fi. The Brooklyn-based one man act of Dustin Payseur has a simple and intimate tone to his material. Fuzzy guitars and distorted vocals take his surf-inspired tunes to an inward and reflective level. The relaxed, bright essence of summer fills his compositions and is starkly contrasted by the moody, conflicted lyrics and heavily-filtered vocalizations.

We always seek to define the tone of “summer” in terms of perfect happiness, but how often is that relevant to our real lives? Summer to me is a time of high emotions and quiet self-reflection, a time to consider who you are in relation to the world you inhabit. Bedroom producer, Dustin Payseur creates a snapshot of the quieter moments of summer, and it’s titled Beach Fossils.

Beach Fossils currently have no formal releases available, but I strongly encourage those of you residing in the Brooklyn area to check out one of his shows.

Apparently I’m the goddess of typos today, for which I apologize. It is indeed, Dustin, and I’ve corrected as such.
