I meant to post this for ya’ll on July 4th as the ideal soundtrack for your respective festivities, but then I ate too many ribs, drank far too much and forgot. It’s OK though, this is also the perfect mix to start off your post-holiday work week.

Last year I came across a mysterious four-part minimix titled Superprince on a music forum. I knew nothing of it, or the people behind the project, but it got more plays in my iTunes last year than any other mix. Last week, on the very same forum, I came across Superprince II, as well as some long-awaited info about the project’s creators.

Don’t be misled by the title, Superprince II is not a compilation of tracks by The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. Philly DJs Shawn Ryan and Peter Dragontail combine indie rock, hip-hop, and electro-pop selections for a mix that’s party-ready and sure to get everyone singing along to something different. This isn’t just another fun summer mix, there are some seriously good DJ skills at work. Tracks of differing genres shift so seamlessly into one another that you’d swear they were recorded in succession. Ryan and Dragontail hibernated away the Philly winter, hard at work on this mix, and the time and care they took shows in their expertly crafted and completely enjoyable end product.
