Pop Parfait :: Sugababes Edition - bryanb

Posted by bryanb

This edition of Pop Parfait is all about the greatest pop girl group you have probably never head of—The Sugababes. Huge in the UK, Europe, Asia and Australia, The Sugababes have enjoyed much success outside of the North American market, but that’s all about to change soon. With last week’s announcement that Jay-Z’s US label Roc-A-Fella Records signed the petite threesome for a multiple album recording contract, the girls are bound to make waves stateside soon enough. Incredibly soon, in fact, promotion for their new single, the Right Said Fred referencing, Get Sexy, has already started and will be sent to radio stations nationwide in the coming weeks.

Here’s some things you need to know about The Sugababes:

“The Sugababesis a concept, not a collection of people whose names you need to remember. Think of Menudo in the 80’s, with its ever-rotating roster of fresh faces. Already the group has seen multiple changes in its lineup and more are sure to come.

The Sugababes (again the “concept”) are not aligned to any one particular genre of pop. They move with the wind, incorporating elements of whatever the pop landscape deems chartable at that moment. 2-step, R&B, Crunk, Doo-Wop, Rock and Dance have all wafted through their records since their inception in the mid-90’s. And I imagine with this recent alignment with Roc-A-Fella we will see a much more pronounced Hip-Hop and Urban feel to their music. Expect future releases to be produced by the current tastemakers in the game: The Dream, J. R. Rotem, Stargate, Tricky Stewart, Danja and Sean Garret all come to mind.

The Sugababes will not stop until they conquer the world—these girls may be nameless and devoid of unique character, but they are tenacious and iron-willed. They will grind and coo their way to the top, or die trying.

Below are a few of my favorite tracks from the archives and click here to watch the new video for Get Sexy:

The Sugababes - Get Sexy (320 kbps)

The Sugababes - Gotta Be You (128 kbps)

The Sugababes - You On A Good Day (224 kbps)

The Sugababes - Overload (128 kbps)

The Sugababes - Freak Like Me (We Don’t Give A Damn Mix) (224 kbps)
