Neon Indian’s debut, Psychic Chasms, has been sitting in my iTunes for a couple weeks now, patiently awaiting the right time, right place moment. Rushing to post Neon Indian would have been unfair, this album is just that good.

Neon Indian is yet another project from Alan Palomo (VEGA, Ghosthustler) and once you’re aware of the background, it’s easy to hear the similarities to Palomo’s VEGA work. Neon Indian reads like a stripped-down, lo-fi, sun-drenched VEGA, chock full of sparse beats, washed-out vocals and bursting synths. Palomo’s innocent, boy-in-his-bedroom vocals bring to mind The Tough Alliance, and the track Deadbeat Summer is a nice parallel to the Swedish act, playing to my inner disaffected youth.

Neon Indian are just off-kilter enough to fly under the radar and just novel enough to attract the attention of the right people. It’s a rare, unpracticed balance that promises the band a future as bright as the sunshine that radiates from their 12-track debut.

File under: Beachwave is the new Dreamwave.
