She’ll Turn The Music On You - V

My Gold Mask are a great dark pop duo from here in Chicago. Lush with references to the era of Kate Bush and Siouxsie and the Banshees, My Gold Mask pound, shake, wail and thrash through midnight melodies laced with rock noir. Vocalist Gretta Rochelle is never afraid to deviate from a chamber pop formula, breaking the icy blackness of instrumentalist Jack Armondo’s backing with a sleazy art school sneer and a dash of avant-garde.
The duo recently released a cover of Jackie DeShannon and Kim Carnes’ 1974 track, Bette Davis Eyes. Gretta’s voice is at her finest on this cover, twisting the light pop number into a dark and thudding wonder. I sincerely hope the folks at Spanish label Buffetlibre take note of My Gold Mask and tap them for their next Rewind project. It would be a marriage made in musical heaven.
Check out more from My Gold Mask on their Bandcamp page. And if you live in Chicago, you can check out the duo live at the Empty Bottle on September 27.

One of my favorite songs of all time. Very hard to cover. Had chills all over. May have to drop by the Bottle.
Sweet voice.
