I Love You When You’re Coming Down - danosaur

Lately, I’ve been finding myself enjoying the upbeat and pop-sensible side of music a lot more than I have in the past. Maybe it’s the beautiful summer we’re having, or just my life’s general upward swing lately, but either way–I’m loving it. I’m also loving Yes Giantess, maybe a little too much. The melodies these guys play are full of drive and emotional passion and yet it’s always in a light-hearted, fun-spirited way.

Their song, Can’t Help It, has been on heavy rotation at work and at home (that’s a big deal in my book). The swooning vocals, catchy as hell synth lines, throbbing bass and wonderfully placed stops and starts make the song perfect for bouncing around in your chair. The lyrics are simple enough—which can bother me at times—but they fit so well that I’m wiling to overlook their simplicity. The song’s chorus line, “I can’t help it, I love you when you’re coming down” has been stuck in my head for the better part of a week or so and I don’t mind one bit.

Yes Giantess are also powerful remixers. With remixes for Little Boots, Wolf Gang, US Royalty and Passion Pit under their belt, they are shaping up to be one of the better and more original bands-slash-DJs alongside Cut Copy, Soulwax and Hot Chip. Their remix for Little Boots’ Every Little Earthquake has been all over the internet lately, and you should definitely check it out if you’re a fan of either group. However, for me, the real powerhouse is their remix of Passion Pit’s, by now staple track, Sleepyhead. A decent amount of the original track remains intact in the remix and Yes Giantess have done a great job of adding just the right amount of new melodies and basslines. They’ve also added different instruments to the composition which lace perfectly throughout the remix. Managing to add new sounds to a remix, without losing the spirit of the original is a tough challenge, but Yes Giantess have conquered it with ease.

Yes Giantess are a pop powerhouse, with enough down to earth indie sensibility to stay away from sounding too cheesy and the right amount of infectious hooks to make you dance. Enjoy Can’t Help It and the band’s remix of Passion Pit’s Sleepyhead.
