Life in San Francisco - V

We wrote up San Francisco’s Girls a few months back and their debut, Album, has been steadily playing on my stereo ever since. Admittedly, I’m still a bit perplexed as to their direction. Half their material is dreamy and polished, the other half jangly and rough. I don’t mind the mix stylistically speaking, but this rift is reflected equally in the production of the tracks. A breezy, crooning melody is followed by live or demo material so rough it sounds like it was recorded in a garage and then run over by a truck. I have a hunch that we won’t hear much more of this sort of thing by the time Girls’ sophomore release comes around, so for now I’m satisfied to listen to their more aurally pleasing material on repeat.

Lust For Life is the Girls’ track everyone has latched onto as a favorite, and while a great track, it’s Life in San Francisco, a b-side off the band’s Lust For Life 7″ that’s become my personal favorite. I’ve never been to San Francisco, but this track, with its lazy, 1950’s-esque crooning and sing-song chorus makes me want to pack a suitcase and disappear with a one-way ticket to a far-off sunset.

Girls are currently touring and if you live in Chicago you can catch their shows at the Empty Bottle on November 12 and 13. Full tour dates can be found here.
