Monday Mornin’ Mixtape :: Monster Mash 2009 - V

The boys of Minneapolis have got it going on. While I’ve yet to travel there myself, I’ve long been observing from afar a city that touts a unique merging of the design scene with nightlife. Flyers are exceptionally executed, and parties are not only curated, but branded. There’s quite a few people doing this well and amongst them is Burlesque designer and DJ, Mike Davis, aka Mike the 2600 King.
Mike is one of the best DJs I’ve had an opportunity to see come through Chicago in recent years. The most interesting thing about Mike’s music is how complementary it is to his artwork. Bold color, heavy iconography and astute references to vintage album art and signage mark Mike’s artistic pursuits and his musical taste is a similarly constructed palette of classic tracks reworked with modern influences. There’s an effortlessness to both his music and art and, from a music perspective, it’s refreshing to see a DJ who values history over trends.
In celebration of Halloween, and in prep for his annual all-oldies Halloween party, Mike, with partner King Otto, has put together the Monster Mash 2009 mixtape, a collection of hits from the past. I can’t say enough good things about this mix, it’s like your favorite oldies station chopped and screwed for maximum danceability. I’m still trying to track down the tracklisting (har-har), but give it a listen in the meantime. Surprises are much more fun anyways.
If you live in Minneapolis, you have no excuse to not be at Monster Mash III with Mike and King Otto on Halloween at 7th St. Entry. Those of us who live elsewhere will just have to get our fix with the abundance of free mixes from Mike and his friends available at BRLSQOTHEQUE.
