Monday Mornin’ Mixtape :: How the Midwest Was One - V

Posted by V

mixtapemonday_onlychildren.jpg

This week I’m excited to share the debut mix from the newly formed Chicago DJ, production and design collective, Only Children. Only Children are Bald E. (Chris Baronner), Dinoscopy (Dino Balocchi), Mister Wolf (Jesse Hozeny) and grayarea (Mcrae Reed). I stopped by their Halloween-themed mixtape release party last Thursday night and now I’m really excited to spread word of this group around. Dinoscopy played a fantastic set of funky nu-disco filtered through house, indie rock and electro, and that description also accurately summarizes their debut mixtape, How the Midwest Was One.

This is one of the better mixtapes I’ve been passed recently. It starts off decidedly funky, and then transitions into some harder electro as it progresses. I’m not usually a fan of anything electro, but the Only Children have done a great job of wrapping the entire mix in a layer of smooth disco that diffuses the normally jarring, crunchy beats of the harder track selections. Everything fits together seamlessly, and I’m an especially big fan of their rework of Prince’s Uptown that kicks off the mix.

Only Children are one of the first electronic groups to come out of Chicago in a very, VERY long time that I can honestly say exactly hit upon my tastes. Check out How the Midwest Was One and as a bonus, their amazing edit of Prince’s Uptown.

FEELING that Prince edit! And I’ve been into that Tigercity remix for a few weeks. These dudes are consistent!
