THE WEEKLY EVERYTHING ed.02 :: Summer sunday - V

Posted by V

weeklyginley.jpg

Getting this column up every week on Friday is proving to be a bit more difficult than I initially anticipated. So, I’ve made the executive decision post The Weekly Everything as more of a surprise. It will still be posted weekly, but the day will be chosen at random. I think people underestimate the time all this blogging shit takes. Anyhow, we’re back with more submissions for your eardrums.

ELLIOT vs. Santogold vs. Missy - Missy Lights (320 kbps)

I’m going to start this off with the most cryptic of the submissions I received. The mysterious “ELLIOT” sent an email containing only download links. I usually like a bit of introduction with the tracks, but for some reason it made me pretty curious to give it a listen. I know some people are already labeling Santogold a sell-out by way of her Bud Light commercial. Personally though, I’m still keeping her album on my radar for my Top Albums of 2008 list. ELLIOT’s track is a mashup of Santogold and Missy Elliot, and I’ve been head-bobbing to it all week. It’s one of those remixes that actually gets better with each listen. Its also rekindled my relationship with Missy Elliot—I’ve decided I’m going to wear a big Hefty sack for Halloween and go as Missy from the Supa Dupa Fly video. I’m getting way off topic here. ELLIOT has just added himself to myspace, so go be one of his first 10 friends and hopefully he will send some more cryptic messages and remixes our way soon.

Cloetta Paris - Cry Just A Little Bit (256 kbps)

I try to keep this column focused on new talent, but every so often I might slip in something else that has been submitted as a preview from releases to come. A few weeks ago I posted the fantastic Verbena No. 4 mix from Spain’s Buffet Libre. I mentioned their upcoming release of 80’s covers, titled Rewind. I’ve received some updates from Marc over at Buffet Libre, and Rewind will be available in just a couple days on July 1st for free download! I will definitely be posting it here on CreamTeam, but in the meantime, check out the preview track he sent us, Shakin’ Stevens’s Cry Just A Little Bit covered by Swedish band Cloetta Paris—so, so pretty.

Skirt - Saint Vigilante (128 kbps)

I don’t talk a lot about the couple years I spent living in West Virginia. Truth be told, they were the best years of my teenage life. There’s a certain beauty to the nature there and a carefree attitude that comes along with living amongst the mountains and the smaller towns. Sometimes I really miss the simplicity of a drive down an empty highway with your family, sun shining on your hair. That to me, is Americana. Skirt are three girls and a guy from Minneapolis, but their sound is far removed from their urban surroundings. They have just released their debut album, Heartbeat. A Flameout. and are currently touring some states that are perfect for their sound—Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Washington and Oregon.

Sigur Ros - Saeglopur (MMMatthias Remix) (320 kbps)

It makes me especially happy when people from outside the US write. I love the power of the internet to get our little blog out over time zones, oceans and thousands of miles. MMMatthias is from Germany and sent in a few remixes. Maybe it’s the Ryan McGinley cover art (I’m a HUGE of everything Ryan McGinley), but I’m loving the new Sigur Ros. MMMatthias’s remix of Saeglopur is on point. I love that he didn’t try to turn something so gorgeous and light into a club banger. The remix stays true to the minimal beauty that is Sigur Ros’ music, and I really appreciate that. This remix is so well-done that it wouldn’t be out of place on an official Sigur Ros remix album.

Konrad - Juanita Cash Harkins (320 kbps)

Konrad - They Call It Murder (320 kbps)

M.I.A. - U.R.A.Q.T. (Konrad Remix) (320 kbps)

It’s a bit of an unsaid secret around here that if your submission for this column totally blows me away, I might just be contacting you to do a full feature in the near future. Konrad of Old Money Crew and Attorney Street falls into this category. (Though I guess I just blew my cover here HA!). I love everything about these boys. Their music matches their look, which matches their writing style. It doesn’t hurt that they look like they all met while working at the local sneaker boutique du jour. You just know these boys would rock the fuck out of a show and I secretly wish I could hang out with them…but I think I’d need to go buy some fresher kicks first…
