VIDEO VAULT :: Bobby Brown – Every Little Step - V
Before Bobby Brown was husband and wife-beater to Whitney, drunk driver and deadbeat father of five, he was a charismatic youth and member of 80s R&B boy band, New Edition. It wasn’t but a few years before his future was foreshadowed and he was voted out of the group for lewd stage antics. At the time, it seemed like a blessing in disguise as Brown struck out on a solo career that would yield some of the definitive hits of the new jack swing genre, and my formative listening years.
Brown’s 1988 album, Don’t Be Cruel went a nearly unheard of eight times platinum and spawned five Billboard Top 10 hits. My Prerogative was an audience favorite that many would argue is still Brown’s biggest career hit, but I always preferred the energetic dance number, Every Little Step. Every Little Step is probably one of the first videos I can remember seeing on MTV. I learned all the moves and put them to the test at school dances and in the backyard with my friends. Looking back at this video now, over 20 years later, I still think the dancing is as fresh as I did when I was 8. If I ever heard a DJ drop this tune in a club, it would be the best night of my life.
Now I just want a blazer with a typographic sleeve…
