Swedish Sunday :: Makthaverskan - V

I shared some of my first thoughts on Gothenburg quartet Makthaverskan’s demo material a couple months back. Their early work was admittedly quite rough and I think people probably brushed the group off, but I felt they had something special. I’ve been keeping an eye on the band since then, eager to see if my hunch was right and their sound would develop into a raw but refined hybrid.
Makthaverskan’s self-titled debut album is now out on Luxury, and I’m coyly offering up an I told you so. With the rough edges of their initial material polished, Makthaverskan remind me of a pop goth version of The Raveonettes. While The Raveonettes favor cold, sweet vocals and walls of distorted noise, Makthaverskan vocalist Maja howls and wails over sometimes hollow, sometimes bright guitar and piano melodies. I recently saw The Raveonettes live, and Makthaverskan would have made a perfect tourmate.
Don’t pass over Makthaverskan a second time. Their debut album is lovely through and through.
