Being There :: Binary 2 Year Anniversary @ Echoplex :: LA - danosaur

Friday night the Binary crew threw the second of their Two Year Anniversary parties, featuring performances from Little Red Radio, Tigercity, Keenhouse and Neon Indian. The lineup was definitely not to be missed, and knowing that I hustled my ass to the show.

I got there just in time to catch the last half of Little Red Radio’s set, a native LA group whose electropunk, dual vocal appeal was just enough to get me moving. They did a cool cover/rework of What Is Love For that definitely set the night off right. When their set was done I was almost ready to award them the honor of show thievery, but little did I know what the rest of the night had in store.

Tigercity was up next, and I’ll be honest, I hadn’t really listened to them much before this show, but once they wrapped up a couple songs I felt like a fool for never paying them more mind. Their sound was full and powerful. Plus, the lead singer’s beard was almost a person itself. (Seriously, it’s THAT intense.) After Tigercity, Los Angeles’ pride and joy, Binary’s Keenhouse, took the stage. The LA man with the unmistakable French Touch performed and mixed brilliantly, and I’d be remiss not to tell you that his sound is even more powerful live than any audio file can express. Keenhouse always tears the roof off any venue he performs at and this show was no exception. He’s definitely an artist I will see any time I can, and so should you.

Finally Neon Indian took the stage for their first headlining LA performance. They had opened for the Crystal Castles a few weeks prior in Hollywood, and I was excited to be catching them live a second time locally. Amidst some unexpected technical difficulties, they poured their little hearts out onstage, embellishing their album tracks to near perfection. They are undoubtedly a group whose potential is nowhere near fulfilled yet, and in my book it’s going to be a pleasure watching them grow as musicians and performers.

As their set came to a close, my friends and I started to head out of the venue and back to the car. On the walk back some bikers had collected outside, and as I admired a few bikes, one of the owners started hollering at me that they had some crystal meth and I should get some! I scoffed at this and laughed with my friends–we didn’t need meth, the Binary 2 Year Annivesary party was more of a high than any drug could have given us.
