Hold On Skin, Fold On - bryanb

I have been a fan of Soap & Skin since earlier this year when I heard her latest full length album, Lovetune For Vacuum. If I had to attempt to compare her to her contemporaries, I would have to say her sound lies somewhere between My Brightest Diamond, and DM Stith, with some Beirut thrown in, and maybe some of the softer Goldfrapp moments. And she’s obviously been influenced by the spirit of Tori. But her form of baroque avant-indie is kind of in a class by itself, atonal at times with meandering, crooked song structures. She is fond of completely muting a song mid-bridge and then heralding back from the edge with multi-layered, thickly accented, obtuse lyrics. It’s kinda gothy, but not goth-rock. I imagine a post-modern parlor full of Transylvanian ex-patriots, awaiting their next meal while she bangs on a piano in the corner lamenting her hunger. Maybe I am watching too much True Blood.
Certainly not for everybody, Soap & Skin, recently released her March Funebre EP, including the fantastic Koze Marxa remix. Listen to it and a couple of choice selections from Lovetune For Vacuum. Oh, and her website is just as creepy. Check it out here.
