I think as we grow older we lose the ability to escape. In our youth our bedrooms were our refuge, wonderlands behind closed doors. I covered my room floor to ceiling in band posters, and later painted all my furniture silver and plastered my walls in tinfoil in an attempt to create a 150 sq. ft. model of Andy Warhol’s Factory. I had drawers filled with secrets I’d never tell and a pillow that spun tales of heartache and dreams for an uncertain future. As we age our bedrooms become empty of the possibilities they once stood for, places we fall asleep, watch some tv and if we’re lucky, get laid once in awhile.

The music of LA’s Best Coast is a gentle reminder that you’re never too old to disappear behind your bedroom door. Bethany Consentino (formerly of Pocahaunted) and Bobb Bruno’s buzzing, sun-kissed escapist melodies mirror the emotions, nervousness and hopefulness of teenage life. Simple compositions with powerful, identifiable lyrics speak equally to a grown-up audience, proving that age is just a number and often we’re just as unsure of life at 29 as we were at 15.
