What Would You Like To Bathe In This Morning? - V

I have a special treat for you today, a track that only you diehard Prince fanatics are going to recognize. It’s been noted that over the course of his career, Prince has amassed hundreds of unreleased tracks. Many will never see the light of day, but those of us who troll Prince bootleg forums for sport will know where to find some of The Artist Formerly Known As’ rarer selections.
Prince’s fabled five volume, 39 disc set, The Work, is a great place to start. The Work contains mostly studio demos, outtakes and a few live bootlegs recorded between 1976 and current day. Many of these tracks are very rough, unmixed and unmastered, but Purple City is an exceptional cut, an unreleased outtake from 1982 that clocks in at over 10 minutes in length and can be found on Volume I of The Work. Purple City floats severed from reality, a stream of conscious jam session full of spaced out funk laced with keys and guitar. It’s been rumored that Prince was fucked out his head when he recorded Purple City, and the bizarre, entrancing jam certainly lends a convincing argument for drug-induced creativity.
Prince plays Alice with the Purple City as his Wonderland on one of the most interesting recordings of his career. Next level, so high.
