Bobb Bruno’s Carnival Of The Fantastic - V

Unless you live and breathe the niches and valleys of the LA music scene, then you most likely hadn’t heard Bobb Bruno’s name until you started listening to Best Coast. Bruno is Bethany Consentino’s right hand man in Best Coast, but it’s his work outside the confines of the band that stands out to me.

To appreciate Bobb Bruno, you first must understand his persona. Bruno is a puppeteer, maneuvering the knobs, keys and chords, a humble obscured figure creating magic from behind dark curtains. The multi-instrumentalist has collaborated with Mika Miko and Abe Vigoda, opened for PJ Harvey and Wilco and even produced some albums, and yet he stands a man of mystery, hesitant towards promotion, existing solely to perfect, and modestly share his art with those in the know.

Earlier in the year Bruno put out an EP of original material on the fantastic LA-based Vosotros label titled Dreamt On. Dreamt On is a collection of six vocalless sonic experimentations that emulate the fantasy, peacefulness and disorienting nature of dreams. Stylistically, Dreamt On will be appreciated by fans of Daedelus and Casiotone For The Painfully Alone. The six tracks combine electronic blips, drum taps, entrancing guitar swirls, and fuzzy synths, perfectly capturing that familiar dynamic of unrest tugging at your eyelids until the world fades to black.

I am not a fan of Wilco, but when Nels Cline lends steel guitar to Bruno’s Fairy Tale Ending, it’s undeniably beautiful. I highly suggest picking up the full Dreamt On EP here.
