Keep On Moving - V

The Chicago Disco Massive is growing larger by the week. I pride myself on loyally following local musicians, but it’s beginning to get a tad ridiculous. Was there an overnight mass exodus from some far off land of body shaking synth funk that I’m unaware of? Or, perhaps one of the Only Children was doused by a drink at the club and multiplied into an army of disco gremlins that only come out on twitter and SoundCloud. Either way, I’m not mad, I’ve just got to work a lot harder if I want to keep up.

I knew production duo Le Principle (Garrett Shrigley and Josh Gard) were from the Midwest, but I didn’t realize they called my city home until I poked around their MySpace and SoundCloud pages. Of the local folks working under the umbrella term of nu-disco, Le Principle lean the closest to recreating a genuine disco sound, sampling artists like Kool & The Gang, Paul Anthony and Chic. By injecting house flavor and French Touch elements into their original material, Le Principle are the definition of disco house. The modern details the duo add to their work, slight hints of electro and heavy use of filtered repetition, blend seamlessly with nods to disco’s past. Le Principle cleverly create disco for a modern audience who favors an authentic sound. Fans of DJ Benny B’s French Touch mix series will love Le Principle.

If you live in Chicago, you can catch Le Principle in the new year at what appears to be the launch of a disco themed monthly titled TRICK at Subterranean. I’m already excited.
