Leah Hayes is a fantastic illustrator with several graphic novels released on Fantagraphics to her credit in addition to work for McSweeney’s, Newsweek, The New York Times and The New Yorker. Equally comparable in quality is her music project, Scary Mansion. Accompanied by Ben Shapiro, Bradley Banks and Vanessa Hayes, Leah’s reflective anti-folk melodies are both dark and optimistic. Scary Mansion’s 2009 debut, Make Me Cry, mixes singer-songwriter fare with distorted punk, grunge and electronic elements. The two faces of Scary Mansion’s sound may suffer from a level of disconnect, but each are singularly strong enough to offer their own respective merits.
