ART BEAT :: Hedi Slimane’s Tiny Dancer - V
It’s no secret that Hedi Slimane, the mastermind behind Dior Homme, has an eye for the young and pretty boys of the world. From his catwalks and afterparties filled with teens to his portrayal of musicians like Esser and These New Puritans in his photographic book, Rock Diary, Slimane never deviates from his trademark aesthetic preference.
I’ve been enjoying browsing Slimane’s online photo diary lately. It’s amazing how much his lens mirrors the seams on his clothing—dark, simple, modern, stark. Slimane creates a fully encompassing visual brand attached to his name without even trying. Slimane’s aesthetic feels effortless, a vision of a world ripe with context, seen through observant eyes.
For his new project in conjunction with VMAN, Slimane forays into video, turning traditional ballet dance modern by setting the talents of 16-year-old Oscar Nilsson of The Royal Danish Ballet Theatre to live rock drumming on a barren stage. Confetti falls upon the shirtless dancer as the masked drummer pounds out beats that mimic Nilsson’s muscular contortions. It’s not intended to be a music video, yet at the same time, it’s a perfect music video.
I’ll be writing more about music’s presence in the arts in the new year, so hopefully you enjoyed this post, a taste of things to come.
