Violet Eyes In Black & White - V

Posted by V

My Gold Mask are a Chicago band that I’ve had my eyes (and ears) on for the past few months. We posted their cover of Bette Davis Eyes over the summer and they’ve recently released their sophomore effort, an EP titled A Thousand Voices. I finally got the chance to see My Gold Mask live at their release party a few weeks back and not only did they sell out the venue, they proved themselves adept performers.

I interviewed the band in advance of their show where they revealed they were in the final stages of completing their first-ever video, for the EP’s lead track, Violet Eyes. The video, directed by Chicago photographer Jim Newberry, released this afternoon. Shot entirely in black & white on a circuit-bent Fischer Price toy camera, its low-res waverings flicker ghostly in time to Gretta Rochelle’s icy vocal cues. Up-and-coming musicians take note, creativity again trumps big budgets.

You can purchase a digital (or hard copy) of A Thousand Voices here and if you prefer to read before you buy, my review of the EP can be found here.
