Prisms And Ripples - V

I wasn’t into Real Estate as much as I thought I would be by the time I finally gave their 2009 debut a few proper listenings. Their atmospheric lo-fi surf psychedelia is definitely pretty, but truthfully a little yawn-worthy, blending together in that let down of a way where nothing stands out. I much preferred the variety of Matthew Mondanile’s other project, Ducktails.
I recently stumbled across Chicago act Pool Holograph who share some stylistic similarities with Real Estate, but leave me feeling much more satisfied. Pool Holograph is the solo project of Wyatt Grant and it sounds like sand dunes, surf and midnight fire pits. Grant’s self-titled (and self-released) 2009 debut album is a work I don’t think anyone heard besides his friends, but it’s good enough it would have surely made my best of the year list, had I discovered it sooner.
Wondrous with variety, languid reflecting pool instrumentals, light guitar and drowsy vocals mark the ten tracks. But the album isn’t without several unexpected moments and that’s what takes it from good, to so good. Grant transitions into a darker place on Keeper. His normally boyish-voiced notes become warped into Suicide-esque echoes. Necking provides the album’s loudest number, breaking up the ebb and flow factor with fuzzy, distorted garage guitar.
Two favorite Pool Holograph tracks below. You can download the full album free, here.
