My Life Is Painful - V

I’ve been spending some time lately (digitally speaking) in the company of LA’s Brainfeeder family. Off their roster you’ll immediately recognize Flying Lotus and also, hopefully, Daedelus and The Gaslamp Killer. Their podcast is excellent and I’m slowly working my way down their artist list, getting familiar with the not-so-familiar names.
Brooklyn transplant Lorn in particular caught my attention with his convulsive dark glitch-hop. Lorn cuts thick dubstep and hip-hop beats with hyperactive IDM. Digitized voice samples, laptop and drum machine all mix dangerously, resonating from underneath a dense fog of static. Lorn’s 7&13 EP is largely short, experimental cuts and offers a nice contrast to the longer selections that comprise the Grief Machine EP.
But my favorite selections from Lorn’s catalog arrive by way of Trained by the Pain, a project of four tracks that rework Notorious B.I.G. and Mobb Deep. When Lorn’s dark production meets the right hip-hop rhymes, the results are foreboding with a bpm that sinks like quicksand.
You can download 7&13 here and Trained by the Pain here, both for free. And if you’re ready to fully immerse yourself in Lorn, I recommend a good poke around his beat graveyard.
