FACE IT: Jarvis Cocker’s encore a nod to Chicago’s House Music History - V

Posted by V

jarvis.jpg(Editor’s Note: Oh for fuck’s sake. I wrote this in a hurry this morning prior to leaving for Pitchfork and forgot to hit Publish. Well, here you go now, several hours later than intended…)

I can’t write much now guys, as I need to leave to get back to Pitchfork soon.

I will be providing some in-depth write-ups of my favorite acts throughout the coming week. However, I simply couldn’t wait to post this—the internet needs it.

Seeing Jarvis Cocker last night was the culmination of over a decade of fandom for me. It’s hard to believe that he is only 4 years younger than my mom. His energy, vibrancy and swagger on stage has yet to be matched by any Pitchfork act. His performance of Black Magic, my favorite of his tracks, was indeed magic.

The very special part of the night came with his encore track. Jarvis took the crowd back to 1987 with a nod to the roots of Chicago House with the track “Face It” by Master C & J. It was a stunning spoken-word style piece punctuated with impromptu howls by Jarvis and a pulsing, spaced-out electronic backbeat.

I’m expanding our little blogging empire here with the introduction of the CreamTeam Bootlegging Divisionâ„¢ (heh). Check out the mp3 below recorded live last night of Jarvis’s encore track. I will be bringing you many more live recordings throughout the following week. I hope you enjoy this over the internet even 10% as much as I did in person.

Face It (Jarvis Cocker Encore, LIVE at Pitchfork 2008, Chicago) (192 kbps)

And don’t forget to stay tuned to the Twitter feed in the right sidebar as I head back to Pitchfork today to check out Les Savy Fav, Ghostface & Raekwon and Cut Copy, among others.
