But trust me on the sunscreen… - V

I really love atmospheric music that features spoken word in place of vocals. There’s just something about talking vs. singing that sets a distinct mood for me. It transports me to a place where the backdrop of daily life is a soundtrack of conversations spoken over instrumentals of my favorite music. I wanted to share a few tracks that fall under this category with you all.

First up is a new discovery for me—Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip. Thou Shalt Always Kill is a fantastic spoken word voyage of the rules for modern living delivered with a “FUCK IT ALL” sensibility which I can’t help but identify with. This track also reminds me of my favorite part of Trainspotting—Renton’s Choose Life speech.

Telefon Tel Aviv is a Chicago (by way of New Orleans) IDM group that push the boundaries of IDM from the experimental noise usually associated with the genre to pure atmospheric beauty. My Week Beats Your Year is my favorite of their tracks and features the aloof, disaffected spoken vocals of Lindsay Anderson.

I couldn’t end this post without the track that set the bar for spoken vocals, Baz Luhrmann’s Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen) off the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack, released over a decade ago in 1996. I recommend listening to this track late at night, in bed, in the dark. The amazing thing about Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen) is the resounding truth of each and every line of the lyrics. I am overcome with a sense of complete calmness and total clarity with every listen.

I leave you with this piece of advice for the day: “Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life…the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don’t.”

I just watched, for like the 5th time, The Big Kahuna last week. The first time I saw it a couple years ago was was the first time I heard that Baz Luhrmann track. That’s a really interesting movie, esp if you’ve ever spent time on the road for work.
