Icelandic Heat - jams dean

Posted by jams dean

Mugison

Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like Icelandic rock-bender Mugison is being slept on. Maybe because he is not in America at the moment, but that doesn’t seem to stop other artists from some healthy, deserved word-of-mouth. It could be due to the fact that his latest release, Mugiboogie, sounds nothing like that other Icelandic band. He is the winner of some Icelandic Music Awards or something, but, you know, I was probably watching infomercials that night and forgot to Tivo it. I mean, you watch the Icelandic Music Awards, right?

Nothing drones on this album, everything punches, quietly or softly, into what the man thinks of Christianity, sex, performing, and then Christianity again. Mugiboogie sounds like it could have been recorded in the swamps of some Florida post-indie-blues-something scene, which makes the Icelandic man all the more interesting to me. And perhaps the only reason Florida comes to mind might be this album can make a person sweat.

Mugiboogie received backlash from critics for its lack of consistency. The theme does jump up and down a lot, every song is all the way out or all the way in. But the trophy of Mugiboogie is that, despite up or down, every song goes all the way.

The best track for me is perhaps the happiest, The Animal, for the undeniable need to sing to sin commiters, “Sh-sh-sh-shame on.” And To The Bone, for the dirty (I mean, dirty), need to sweat.
