I went to a big college in a small town. I discovered club nights (and I use that term very loosely) during this era. A group of local DJs rented out a restaurant and would turn it into 2- level club once a month. This was pre-Daft Punk’s Discovery, the era of Modjo, Cassius and Basement Jaxx which gave rise to a full-on UK Garage explosion as Craig David and MJ Cole appeared stateside. We called all this Disco House.
Hey Champ DJs passed along their Knockout Mix last week and it immediately made me nostalgic for the Days of Disco House . Some of my personal favorite tracks fom this era like Modjo’ s What I Mean and Stardust’s Music Sounds Better are mixed into current IT tracks from Lifelike and Lo-Fi-Fnk. Despite using quite a few harder track selections, Hey Champ DJs manage to keep the Disco House mood alive through creative mixing. Even XXXchange’s Shake It takes on a funky, disco sensibility.
