Jimmy Jamz and Bobby Evans are kinda dark

Bravado doesn’t have to be stupid. MC Jimmy Jamz and DJ Bobby Evans from Brother Reade have been proving this point for some time now. Brother Reade from day one were receiving critical shout-outs from just about every publication, but after their full length album Rap Music (Record Collection, July 2007), it seems they sort of dropped from the map. The only live performances they have done have been either in their new home (LA) or their old stomping hood (Winston-Salem, North Carolina), with the exception of a stop in London. But after a year-long disappence, Brother Reade is doing an east coast tour in November with Mates of State and yesterday posted two new tracks on their Myspace.

Judging by the new instrumental DIA and the profile picture on the Myspace, it looks like Jimmy is stepping past rapping and juicing up the drums. The interesting part, despite the fact that DIA sounds like a tame background instrumental, is how quietly sinister it can be. The vibe conjures the tribal image everyone else seems to be running towards, only smoother. Also, considering that it’s a live recording, it’s an impressive feat by any person accustomed to just holding the microphone.

The vocals for Don’t Start None were originally on a mixtape on Jam’s own personal Myspace. Bobby’s instrumental accompaniment smooths out the flow with some of the choicest lyrics anyone could hit:

( I could some things to make the ladies flutter / You don’t want to introduce me to your baby’s mother / I will maybe cut her / ‘Cause my game be butter )

Bobby and Jamz are always on the same point together, stepping dangerously close to a thug mentality, but always maintaining a level head. Jamz doesn’t stutter, he’s patient and he’s willing to let you take a minute to think about what he said before the punch line hits you. The two never rise out of the rap game into the same outer-space futuro weirdness that others are shining on. They just keep grinding out their brand of street-corner liquor-store wisdom.

Unfortunately, I can’t seem to get my hands on these mp3’s yet, so I’m just going to have to leave you with basically the #1 most likely song to get your blood flowing in 2007: The Marcie Song. According to Brother Reade, the next album is due out in 2012. That sounds about right.
