Here Comes The Hotstepper - V

I’ve always been mesmerized by Fashion Week. I don’t particularly covet the clothes nor care whom the next IT face to strut the catwalk will be. My interest is purely artistic. I love the merging of fashion, music and art that takes place on the stages during Fashion Week. Get rid of the models and clothing and you’d still be able to guess the designer based on their set and soundtrack. From the restrained modernism of Calvin Klein to the surreal decadence of Alexander McQueen, the visual and aural identities of the shows run the gamut. A feast of sensory overload prances on stilettos, transforming makeshift stages into live music videos. It’s branding in the flesh (literally).

I came across an archive of mp3 recordings of the soundtracks to some of the Fashion Week shows (2007-2009) via fashion illustrator/collage artist, JUSTJR. I loaded them all onto a playlist and it’s amazing how easy it is to match up the designer with their mix. I thought I’d share a couple of my favorites. The sound quality is not consistent across the mixes, so I’ve tried to limit my selections to those of better quality. I was unable to find full tracklistings but have provided some notes below.

Sonia Rykiel’s mix is my favorite and is very chic and very French. It features one of my favorite songs, Mellow Yellow by Donovan plus covers of Paint It Black and I’m Waiting for the Man. Balmain’s mix from Frederic Sanchez is a richly woven tapestry of tracks from The Cure. Lagerfeld, much in tune with his signature fingerless leather driving gloves, melds edgy rock with electronics. Vuitton’s mix is composed entirely of French Chanteuse Edith Piaf. The sound quality isn’t quite as good as some of the other mixes, but it oddly results in sounding like Edith is RIGHT in the room with you.

Hope you all enjoy these!
