Swedish Sunday: Irene - V

Welcome back to Swedish Sunday! Today you’ll meet Irene.
Don’t judge a band by its name. Göteborg, Sweden’s Irene is actually not a female singer/songwriter as their name might lead you to believe. Irene is a mixed group consisting of anywhere from 8-12 musicians performing everything from doo-wop vocals, to trumpet, to the staples of guitar and drums.
Irene seem to have taken quite a bit of influence from American doo-wop, folk and surf music. It might be a hard comparison to make right away, but look past their accents and you’ll see that the melodies and instrumentation fit right in with so much of the classic American music of our past. Personally, I love the dimension their Swedish heritage adds to their music. The gentle dramatics of their vocals bring a distinctive, modern touch and variety in the instrumentation is upbeat and never boring.
Irene’s unique sound does a fantastic job of bridging the transcontinental divide. From the beaches of California to the bars of Göteborg, Irene has the world dancing!
