Touch It (If You Wanna) - V
I’m a couple weeks late posting this, but the video for Mims’ new track Move (If You Wanna) is a lesson in the power of great visuals.
I’ll be honest, I was quite surprised to see such a stylish, well-executed video for the new track from the man who brought us This Is Why I’m Hot. I guess the allure of Mims has thus far been lost on me. He has little to say of relevance and does not possess a particularly smooth or polished lyrical flow. Move as a track doesn’t do much to change my opinion on Mims’ musical ability. The production on Move is unshakable in its similarity to Busta Rhymes’ Touch It. From the Daft Punk Technologic-esque sample in Move’s intro to a slow flow punctuated by verses delivered with fast aggression, the likeness falls into career suicide territory.
Director Keith Schofield is nothing short of a miracle worker. Schofield takes the focus completely off the track, losing the viewer to a trippy, zero gravity street scene where forward is back and up is down. The video is stylish, endlessly engaging and a perfect fit to the (albeit jacked) production. Mims needed this video to add any legitimacy to this track, the first off his new album Guilt out in April. Mims may not be the best (or most ethical) musician, but apparently he knows a good director’s reel when he sees one.
