Maybe its my impending vacation or simply because today’s been the first really decent, sunny weekend of the year, but the air is warm and people have their sunglasses on and it just puts me in a certain rock and roll mood. The kind of mood that’s less goliath-sized beats and synth riffs and more wry lyrics, wistful harmonies and sun-drenched guitar work.
Oakland, California based band Grand Lake are releasing their new album Nevermint on March 24th and it’s chock-full of the kind of nostalgic production I pine for this time of year. Tracks like “Oedipus Hex” and “Concrete Blonde on Blonde” have that classic Pixies feel, and in the interplay of vocals on “She’s A Hater”, Erika Pipkin even taps into her inner Kim Deal. Good stuff for a nice day.
