How Can You Dance If You Never Dare? - V

People love to hate on mainstream pop music. It’s easy to dismiss pop music as one dimensional and pop musicians as fabricated entertainers, but the interesting thing about the genre is that beneath the perfect bodies and fake smiles, are a bevy of truly talented voices, crafting the subtleties of the music behind the scenes.
I recently introduced you Miike Snow, a trio sure to be making waves in 2009. A project with decidedly indie-leanings, two of the members are better known as powerhouse pop production duo Bloodshy & Avant. Today I’d like to introduce you to another unique musical voice, unafraid to share her talent with the mainstream pop world.
LA-based electro-pop duo Electrocute first came into the public eye during the tide of electroclash. The electroclash movement was an interesting phenomena. What began with the obvious voices like Fischerspooner distilled down to an umbrella term, incorporating almost any live electronic act. Often the negative effect of lumping the dissimilar acts together was outweighed by the positive, allowing bands like Electrocute to quickly rise to recognition.
Nicole Moirier and Mia Dime formed the original iteration of the project, releasing an EP and LP of pure, dreamy electro-pop goodness on the now defunct Emperor Norton Records. Shortly thereafter, Dime left the group and was replaced with Holly Doll, a second partnership that did not pan out and eventually found Moirier disbanding Electrocute to pursue songwriting. It was during this hiatus that Moirier lent her distinctive voice to mainstream pop, teaming up with Freescha, a Cali-based duo known for their writing work with Sia, to co-write Heaven on Earth for Britney Spears’ 2007 album, Blackout. Moirer again worked with Spears in 2008, claiming full writing credits for Circus’ Mmm Papi and Rock Me.
Reinvigorated from her foray into pop writing and a chance meeting with Australian Legs Le Brock, Moirier returned to Electrocute with Le Brock by her side to create some of the project’s poppiest, well-executed material to date. Skull-nodding, jump-on-the-bed-until-your-head-hits-the-ceiling anthems fill the pair’s 2008 EP On The Beat and promise a bright future for these not-so-mainstream pop princesses.
